Uruguay
Partners has been working in Uruguay since 1967, when the Uruguay-Minnesota Partners was founded. The chapter’s efforts to advance judicial reform in Uruguay played a crucial role in the creation of the country’s first probation system. In 2013, Uruguay hosted the Conference on Alternatives to Incarceration, Latin America’s first-ever international conference on prison reform. In addition to our work in prison reform, Partners is recognized in Uruguay for our youth, educational, cultural and professional exchanges.

Overview
The Uruguay Chapter aims to connect services in the areas of culture, vulnerable population, education, volunteerism, youth integration, art, agriculture, and to promote exchanges by sending professionals in those areas.
One of our most impactful programs has been in administration of justice and the subsequent institution of parole as an alternative to prison. Laws were changed in 2011 by the Court System in Uruguay. This project evolved from treating cases of domestic abuse begun in 1996 and has evolved dealing with law enforcement officers, social workers, parole officers, judges, and lawyers.
