Regions
Peru
In the early 1960s, Jim Boren, a native Texan and Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development mission in Lima, Peru, persuaded friends in Texas to start a people-to-people program with his friends in Peru. Shortly after, this unique bilateral partnership became the model for Partners of the Americas, and in 1964, the Peru-Texas Partners was founded.

Overview
The Peru chapter of Partners of the Americas was the first chapter established 48 years ago. It collaborates closely with its Texas sister chapter in the planning and implementation of volunteer activities to improve the lives and opportunities of the Peruvian population.
El capítulo Partners of the Americas-Peru tiene 40 años de existencia colaborando estrechamente con su capítulo hermano Partners Texas en la planificación y ejecución de actividades voluntarias para mejorar las vidas de los peruanos. Durante los últimos cinco años viene ejecutando los siguientes dos programas.
Recuperación de Viña Vieja
La comunidad rural de Viña Vieja compuesta por unas 100 familias dedicadas a la agricultura se encuentra en la provincia de Chincha a dos horas al sur de Lima. Fue afectada seriamente por un terremoto en agosto de 2007. La reconstrucción de la comunidad ha sido liderada por Partners Texas con dinero y voluntarios tejanos visitantes y apoyada por Partners Perú. Durante los últimos cinco años se ha realizado la reconstrucción de tres aulas de la escuela primaria; el equipamiento de una biblioteca con libros donados por Partners USA y computadores donados por el Ministerio de Educación del Perú; la reactivación de un centro de salud; la construcción y equipamiento de un comedor que provee comidas diarias a la comunidad; la instalación de cocinas ecológicas; la instalación de un sistema de agua potable; la construcción de un centro comunal; campañas de salud apoyadas por enfermeras practicantes tejanas; y enseñanza de inglés.
Intercambios de Jóvenes
Durante los últimos cinco años el capítulo ha venido ejecutando un programa de Jóvenes Líderes y Jóvenes Embajadores con financiamiento del Departamento del Estado de los Estados Unidos. Durante este período se han mandado 62 jóvenes entre los 15 y los 18 años de edad a los Estados Unidos, primero a Washington por 5 días para una orientación de la historia, cultura y organización de ese país y luego a Texas por 15 días donde se alojan con familias tejanas, asisten colegios locales y conocen programas estatales y locales de desarrollo socioeconómico. Al regreso al Perú ejecutan proyectos individuales o grupales poniendo en práctica su liderazgo. Algunos proyectos han sido enfocados en proteger el medioambiente, fomentar la lectura entre niños, evitar el consumo de drogas y la infección de VIH-SIDA, capacitar a madres solteras en actividades empresariales y vigilar por la salud de los niños. Estos jóvenes provienen de la ciudad capital de Lima y de las ciudades provinciales de Chiclayo, Trujillo, Cusco, Arequipa y Ayacucho. Ahora cuentan con su propia organización y red de comunicación nacional mediante la cual planifica y ejecuta sus propias actividades.

100,000 Strong in the Americas
The 100,000 Strong in the Americas (100K) Innovation Fund expands opportunities for higher education institutions to create partnerships and launch innovative student exchange and training programs. This opens access to underrepresented student populations, improves workforce development training, increases public-private investment, and strengthens people-to-people ties between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean.
Education exchanges have long been used as a tool to foster international cooperation and promote technical, linguistic, and intercultural skills development for students to operate in an increasingly globalized world. Created in 2013 by the White House’s National Security Council, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Partners of the Americas, and NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the 100K Innovation Fund is an impactful hemisphere-wide education initiative that creates dynamic regional collaboration across the private sector, foundations, government entities, NGOs, and academia to support higher education partnerships and increase the number and diversity of students in the Americas who have access to innovative training and exchange programs.
Unlike traditional scholarship programs, which support individual students or faculty, the 100K Innovation Fund stimulates innovation at the institutional level and provides critical funding on a competitive basis to higher education institutions across the Americas to build partnerships that result in innovative student exchange and training programs that are scalable and sustainable.
