From Montevideo to Minnesota : How One Exchange Changed Lives for Uruguay’s U-14 Girls’ Soccer Team

This summer, a group of determined young girls from Uruguay made history. The Uruguay U-14 women’s soccer team didn’t just participate in the 2025 Target USA Cup, the largest international youth soccer tournament in North America—they will return home as champions.
But behind this victory lies a powerful story of connection, vision, and collaboration—one that began with a simple question: How can we break the barriers that prevent youth from experiencing the world beyond their borders?
A Seed Planted in Montevideo
In 2024, Gerard Lagos, President of the Minnesota Chapter of Partners of the Americas and a long-time advocate for youth development through sport, traveled to Montevideo, Uruguay, on an Education & Culture (E&C) Travel Grant. His goal? To explore new ways to connect soccer, school, coaching education, and language learning as tools for international youth exchange.
His meetings with educators, coaches, and local leaders focused on:
- Overcoming language barriers
- Integrating teachers and coaches as exchange advocates
- Creating group travel models—such as sports teams—that allow youth to travel confidently and safely
- Centering the role of schools and families in international opportunities
It was during this visit that Gerard and members of the Uruguay Chapter—María José Pesce, David Kroonblawd, and Gilda Battagliese (Uruguay Chapter President and head of the International Board)—met with the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo. That meeting became the catalyst for something extraordinary.
From Conversation to Impact
Inspired by the shared vision, the U.S. Embassy in Uruguay stepped in to support a groundbreaking initiative: bringing the Uruguay U-14 girls’ team to Minnesota for the 2025 Target USA Cup.
For many of these girls, it was their first time leaving the country—and for all of them, it was a moment that will shape their lives forever.
They faced challenges—flight delays, suspended matches, cultural differences—but none of that stopped them. They played with heart, unity, and purpose. And when the final whistle blew, they had earned not only a championship trophy, but also the admiration of thousands.
More Than a Tournament
This exchange was more than soccer. It was about:
- Building global citizens
- Empowering girls through sport
- Creating bridges between educators, families, coaches, and communities
Through the efforts of our Uruguay and Minnesota Chapters, this initiative showed what’s possible when we invest in youth leadership, international friendship, and gender equity in sports.
A Call to Action
At Partners of the Americas, we believe these experiences are transformational—not just for those who travel, but for entire communities. Let this victory inspire us to continue building inclusive, innovative exchange programs that remove barriers and open doors.
Congratulations to the Uruguay U-14 team—and to the visionary leaders who made this journey possible. You’ve reminded us what the Power of Partnership truly looks like.
