Wisconsin Technical College Wins Grant, Will Expand Study Abroad to Colombia

Aaron Gorenc, International Activities and Education Abroad Manager at Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) in Appleton, WI, is passionate about students having the opportunity to study abroad. In high school, Gorenc participated in two study abroad exchanges to Germany, and as an undergraduate he studied abroad in Switzerland. Gorenc’s experiences led him to be passionate about the imperative role study abroad plays in a person’s education. “From early on, I wanted to talk with students about how and why a study abroad experience is necessary in the global economy we are in,” Gorenc said.

100K Strong and the REM Factor in Social Entrepreneurship

While at the Second Hemispheric Workshop on 100,000 Strong in the Americas I participated in a series of “What Works” sessions and listened intently as international educators who had both won or lost in our open competitions shared more about their proposals to increase the flow of students within the hemisphere. What I found striking was the level of intensity and meaning that they gave to the development of the proposals and how important it was to them to win one of these small $25,000 grants.

A Smarter Path Forward for Study Abroad in the Americas

The atmosphere at the onset of the second 100,000 Strong in the Americas Capacity Building Workshop, supported by the U.S. Department of State, was contagious – the room swelled with hundreds of higher education experts eager to explore what works in student exchange. The turnout revealed the deep-seated interest in the hemisphere to improve educational opportunities – an interest that, as the past five years indicate, will only continue to grow.

Winning Institutions of 100,000 Strong in the Americas Funding Announced Today at the Summit of the Americas

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA, April 9, 2015: Today, at the Summit of the Americas, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced the winners of the Santander Bank-sponsored competition of the 100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund. The nine winning institutions involve university partnerships between the United States and Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, and Paraguay. Winners will be celebrated at a reception on April 10 at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s Earl S. Tupper Research and Conference Center in Panama City, Panama. The reception, hosted by Partners of the Americas and NAFSA: Association of International Educators, will honor current strategic commitments to the 100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund including: CAF Development Bank of Latin America, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Exxon Mobil Foundation, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation, Santander Bank, and Sempra International.

A unique partnership among North Carolina State University, the University of Costa Rica and Chiquita Brands has come together and won a grant during the recently completed Santander Round of the 100,000 Strong in the Americas Innovation Fund.
