PROGRAM INFORMATION

Our two week Spanish Language and Cultural Immersion Program is an excellent opportunity for teachers, students, volunteers, or anybody who wants to learn Spanish and have the experience of a lifetime.  This summer (July 13 - July 27), join former Guatemala resident Diego Cerezo, for an incredible two-week immersion into the language and culture of the beautiful colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala.  This 16th century city was the Spanish colonial capital of the Americas. UNESCO has proclaimed Antigua "a colonial monument to humanity."  One-on-one intensive language instruction is provided by the Union School of Antigua.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

SPANISH LESSONS:  Participants will receive more than thirty (30) hours of intensive instruction at Centro Linguistico La union. "Centro Linguistico La Union" is an excellent Spanish school located within walking distance of your hotel.  It has successfully prepared hundreds of Peace Corps volunteers, diplomats from around the world, airline employees, and many international students. The school's focus is intensive with individualized instruction. It can accomodate the beginner with no experience speaking Spanish, as well as the advanced student seeking to completely master the language. Your teacher will tailor your program to meet your specific needs and interests. La Union is accredited through La Universidad Rural de Guatemala, the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, and INGUAT (the Guatemalan Tourism Board). Lessons are conducted every weekday afternoon.

FIELD & SIDE TRIPS:  As part of your "Total Immersion" experience, guided Spanish speaking activities are taken every day during weekdays.  Some of the trips included in your program are a climb up the volcano Pacay; tours of coffee, macadamia nuet and orchid farms; tours of artisan factories of jade, silver and textiles; art galleries and museums; churches and cathedrals; markets; and a slasa and merengue dance lesson.  To ensure that you are always learning, all guided tours are done in Spanish (with English translation if needed).

EXCURSIONS:  Two Weekend excursions  are included in your program.  Your will visit Lake Atitlan, where you can zip-line across a mountain overlookng this beautiful lake, see a nature and butterfly reserve, practice your bargaining skills at the street market, lay by the pool of your hotel, or simply walk the shores of this spectacular lake surrounded by three volcanoes.  Your will also discover the incredible Maya city of Tikal, located in the Peten region in northern Guatemala.  Explore this fascinating ancient city that lies hidden within the dense tropical jungle of Peten, and climb one of it's many temples/pyramids that reach far above the tree line.

ACCOMODATIONS:  You will stay in a hotel where friendly staff and great service will make you fell right at home.  Our hotel arrangements are an integral part of our program and allow you to get to know the people and culture of Antigua in an up-close and personal way.  The hotel is located in the heart of Antigua, just one block from Antigua's Central Plaza and three blocks from the Union School.  The hotel's native staff members will encourage you to speak only Spanish!

SOCIAL COMMITMENT:  As part of our continuing efforts in helping the local community, a project to benefit underprivileged  scholls and children in Antigua is underway.  As part of our field & side trips, participants will visit one of the schools and will be able to interact with the children and pass out donations.  Last year we donated five computers and other necessary tools to "Escuela Vuelta Grnade".
