Farmer to Farmer-Haiti

The Farmer to Farmer program in Haiti concentrates on increasing small and medium-sized producer income through diversification of products and better marketing strategies, while practicing sustainable agricultural policies. Vegetables, honey, and small animals are the focus. Production and marketing assistance is critical in rural Haiti, and these are the areas where Partners places an emphasis. Benito Jasmin, Country Coordinator, leads the following projects:

Apiculture
Project Purpose: Through the Apiculture project, US volunteers work with Haitian beekeepers and local organizations to improve honey production and profitability for small and medium scale beekeepers, and to strengthen agribusinesses and producer groups.

Project Activities: Volunteers provide assistance in areas such as hive construction and management; bee handling; pest control; fabrication of bee handling equipment; post-harvest handling, processing, and labeling; marketing; agribusiness and cooperative management; and training trainers in cooperative development.

Small Animal Production
Project Purpose: Small animal production has strong potential for contributing to food security and wealth creation in Haiti. Partners Farmer to Farmer Program to date has focused primarily on rabbit production, with some technical assistance provided in goat production. Through the Small Animal Production project, US volunteers work with Haitian rabbit raisers, goat raisers, and local organizations to improve production and profitability for small and medium scale farmers, and to strengthen agribusinesses and producer groups.

Project Activities: Volunteers provide assistance in areas such as disease management, rabbit cage construction, forage and nutrition, reproduction, goat milk quality, meat processing and quality assurance, and marketing.

Horticulture
Project Purpose: For small farmers in Haiti, increased crop production and sales translates into food for family consumption in addition to growth and diversification of family income. Through the Horticulture project, US volunteers work with Haitian farmers and local organizations to improve production yields and profitability for small and medium scale fruit and vegetable farmers, and to strengthen agribusinesses and producer groups.

Project Activities: Volunteers provide assistance in areas such as composting, soil fertility, pest control and disease management, nursery development, post harvest handling, packaging and labeling, marketing, and cooperative development.
